Discover the dark days of late-May 1940 as a new generation of soldiers faces the onslaught of the all-conquering German Army! This day tour takes you north from Arras through a series of villiages where valiant 'rear-guard' actions by British troops resulted in massacres at the hands of ruthless Waffen SS units. These brave men allowed the bulk of the British Expeditionary Force, along with French and Allied troops to retreat to the beleaguered town of Dunkirk, where more than 300,000 would be rescued by the 'Littel Ships' as part of 'Operation Dynamo'.
Day 1: Retreat to Dunkirk
Itinerary
- Depart Arras around 9.00 am.
- View and consider the Le Paradis battlefield & Massacre Memorial, Lestrem.
- Visit to the Le Paradis War Cemetery, Lestrem.
- Visit to the Wormhout Barn Massacre & Memorial, Wormhout.
- Visit to the Musee Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo, Dunkirk.
- Vist to coastal batteries at Leffrinckoucke (Zuydcoote).
- Lunch is in Dunkirk.
- Return to Arras for the 5.00 - 6.00 pm conclusion of the Tour.
All tours are based in the old town of Arras. We can recommend accommodation in hotels or guest houses our clients have happily stayed at.
Pick-up/drop-off is at your Arras accommodation or at the Arras train station.
